Hardware

ibiblio.org uses hardware from a variety of companies, including IBM, Dell, and the now defunct VA Linux. For the last 3 years, almost all of the production systems run Linux. The last non-Linux system was decommissioned in early 2003.

The main ibiblio site is now running on an LVS web cluster, which makes life very smooth.

Software

Given ibiblio's focus on open source software and public domain content, open source solutions are employed whenever possible. As mentioned above, the servers run Linux (or GNU/Linux if you prefer), mainly RedHat. Application software includes:

Network

ibiblio.org is part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the ibiblio production servers are housed in the UNC-CH data center. What this means is that the ibiblio network is really part of the UNC network. The folks at ATN Networking do a fantastic job of keeping everything online, and our only problems with the network stem from our being too popular.
